A beautifully rebound set with beige leather spines and forecorners, gilt titles to the spines and tan cloth boards. Volume I of this new edition was published in 1850, vol’s II - IV were published in 1851. Sixty six engravings and numerous woodcuts. Vol IV has the 22 colour chromolithographs of the various tartans with all tissue guards in place. The map is not present.

Vol1, The Darwinian Theory. Third impression 1905.xiv and 460pp. Vol2, Post Darwinian Questions, Heredity and Utility. New edition 1900, x and 344pp, some uncut. Vol3, Post-Darwinian Questions, Isolation and Physiological Selection. First edition 1897. viii and 181pp with a 48 page booksellers catalogue at the rear. All volumes show spotting and shelfwear, particularly vol1, but all bindings are tight and are internally clean. Some minor tears to some page edges as some were left uncut by the printers, burt there is no loss. Bright gilt titles to the spines. All portraits and tissue guards present. Previous owner’s name neatly on fep of each volume.

Dated ink inscription (1871) on paste down fep. Binding slightly shaken with some foxing to fep’s. Shelf wear damage to top and bottom of spine with corners of boards bumped. Beautiful gilt owl on front board and gilt titles on spine.
