Obtained by Sergeant Henry Freemantle of the Natal Police in Zululand around the time of the Bambatha rebellion, 1906.
This ritual cum ceremonial item is a representation of a Zulu/Swazi hunting spear. Worn in conjunction with a miniature shield, symbolic of fighting the forces of evil. The wire work displays the typically Swazi design of using both copper and steel wire together. The spear was very possibly obtained in the greater Natal and brought to Zululand by a local diviner. Such practice was common.
