Obtained from Bushmen in the Otjiwarongo area in the 1960’s. This symbolic bow and arrows set is used during rituals involving courtship and hunting.
Produced by bushmen in the 1960’s for the tourist trade. The Dutch Reformed Church Mission at Tsumkwe were involved in facilitating this trade. We are able to deduce from the following that this item would not have been in use:
1. The arrowheads would be simply a blunt stump.
2. The ostrich shell beads adorning the quiver should be polished to a smoother finish.
3. The quiver itself should be cylindrical and beaded on only one side.
However all materials used are entirely authentic. Gemsbok horn for the bow and arrowheads. Plant fibre to the shafts. Fine sinew for the bowstring. Antelope skin for the quiver, probably Steenbok or Duiker. Ostrich shell beads and sinew for their attachment.
