Welcome to Quagga’s latest newsletter, and thank you for subscribing. This month we have some top South African art on offer. As winter draws to a close we look forward to seeing many of our foreign clients on their yearly sojourn to our country. It has been a long and cold winter but we have been busy collecting lots of new stock and both shops are packed to the rafters with interesting items. Here is a small selection:

SYMBOLS ON A BEACH
Symbols on a Beach
Alexis Preller (1911 – 1975)
54.5 x 44cm, oil on canvas
Signed and dated ’49

There is a label to the verso of the frame from the 1972 Preller Retrospective Exhibition held at the Pretoria Art Museum.

This excellent example of the artist’s work contains many of the images and symbols that are common to his oeuvre. Eggs, candles and in particular, shells. At the time of this painting, Preller had just returned from a trip to Zanzibar and the Seychelles Islands and the marine theme is clearly seen in this work. Preller’s work is packed with symbolism and though its language resists obvious interpretation, the answer often lies in simple visual perception. Preller’s style set him apart from his contemporaries, and today there is no other artist that can fill his place in the South African context. Please click here for more...

GIRL WITH PIG-TAILS
Girl with Pig-tails
Maria Magdalena (Maggie) Laubser (1886 – 1973)
34.5 x 43cm, oil on board
Signed and dated ’38

An expressionist portrait with the typical humble subject matter that is common to Maggie Laubser’s work. She was much criticized over the years for the perceived simplicity of the vision she wanted to create but has come to be recognized as one of South Africa’s finest painters. Perhaps it is the melancholic honesty of the faces of many of her portraits that the viewer identifies with - or perhaps they reflect the personal nature of the artist herself.
