Quagga Rare Books & Art
NEWSLETTER - September 2010

Spring is nearly here and the oaks in Stellenbosch are beginning to sprout fresh green leaves. We have been working hard through the winter to source new and interesting stock. This month, Simon is off to London for a fortnight of inspiring browsing, and maybe a bit of trading, and George will be tripping through Europe for a few weeks in search of the rare, beautiful, and inspirational; and just perhaps a few rare treasures.

PHOTOGRAPH OF PRESIDENT PAUL KRUGER

photograph of President Paul Kruger

This month we are auctioning a rare signed and inscribed photograph of President Paul Kruger. The photograph is 20 x 24cm and bears the following inscription: "Aan den heldsgist (sic) heer A. Fischer ter herinnering aan mijn …tydelijk verblijf in Europa. Hilversum, 1 August 1901".

Abraham Fischer (1850 - 1913) was a lawyer and advocate in Cape Town, later becoming Chairman of the Oranje Union and in 1907, the Prime Minister of the Orange Free State. He was also the grandfather of noted anti-apartheid activist, Braam Fischer.

This photograph dates to a few years earlier when Fischer was the chairman of a delegation sent to Europe to solicit intervention in the Anglo-Boer War. His delegation had limited success but on Kruger’s arrival in Holland and subsequent stay in Hilversum, support was at a high. Dated 1 August 1901, it was inscribed barely a week after his beloved wife had passed away on the 20th of July.

Of interest regarding this photograph is that both men suffered a physical handicap: Fischer had lost his right eye at age 11, during a school initiation; and Kruger his thumb during a hunting accident. Note the strange position of Kruger’s left hand, concealing his disfigurement.

Condition: Good.
The photograph is laid on card and has suffered some loss to the bottom right corner. Some scratches and light rubbing to the surface. The inscription is some what faded, though clearly legible. Kruger’s signature is particularly bold. Please contact us if you would like a larger scan of the photograph.
