Quagga Rare Books and Art

NEWSLETTER - August 2011

We have recently acquired a wonderful Thomas Bowler watercolour. Thomas William Bowler (1812-1869), was born in England and came to South Africa in 1834 as the manservant of Astronomer Royal Thomas Maclear, after whom Maclear's Beacon was named. Their relationship did not last long and Bowler was dismissed in 1835. However some of Bowler's earliest work remains in Maclear's letters, which he illustrated the margins of with drawings of scenes round and about the observatory. Bowler was later to become a drawing teacher in Cape Town and had a prolific career both there and in Natal.

Thomas William Bowler

This scene titled: On the Beach Near the Military Hospital, is watercolour on paper and comes from Dr. Ryno Greenwall's collection. It has also been authenticated by Frank Bradlow. Plate 4 of Frank and Edna Bradlow's book, Thomas Bowler of the Cape of Good Hope, shows a very similar work done in 1853, from Woodstock beach.
This watercolour is 32.5 x 17.5cm, is unsigned and in very good condition.

Another interesting item we have is a small Dutch Bible with a Cape Silver clasp by Lodewyk Willem Christiaan Beck. The bible, in Gothic Script, is not dated, but the attached two books of psalms are dated 1821 and 1829. It was obtained by the previous owner from the Scholz family in 1961. The clasp is hallmarked with an 'a', a 'lion' and a 'castle'.
