Beknopte Schets der Ontwikkeling en Geboorte van het Kind.

An interesting new item on our shelves is the Dutch medical book: Beknopte Schets der Ontwikkeling en Geboorte van het Kind. Door Dr. Konig.

Beknopte Schets der Ontwikkeling en Geboorte van het Kind.

The text, in Dutch, starts out with an apology for the inappropriateness of the subject matter. There are 31 pages of text in which the development of a feotus and the birth of a child are discussed. At the back of the book is a fold-out illustration of a womb. The fold-out is in very good condition. There is no date in the book but it is appears to be from about 1850. Set of six framed photographs
Used as part of the Bleek/ Lloyd collection
Photographed by Samuel Baylis Barnard (1874-75), who had a studio in Adderley Street.

These six rare photographs relate to the Wilhelm Bleek/ Lucy Lloyd studies made in Mowbray in the 1870's .They were found at a country auction in Scotland a few months ago. They were attached to the few remaining pages of a tatty 19th Century photograph album.

One of the photographs shows former convict # 4630 of the Breakwater prison, |han?kass’o or Klein Jantje. He was one of the San who stayed at the Bleeks home in Mowbray where records of San folklore, personal experiences and language were collected by Wilhelm Bleek and Lucy Lloyd. |han?kass’o was released in 1871, and returned to the N.W. Cape. In 1878 he returned to Cape Town and stayed at the Bleeks home for nearly two years where he was considered as the greatest of storytellers.

It was during this period that this photograph was taken by well- known Cape photographer Samuel Baylis Barnard.

Another photograph taken by Barnard in 1874/75 is of !kweiten ta ||ken, who also stayed at the Bleek household where Lucy Lloyd filled 2 notebooks with her many interesting comments on the role of women in the clan. The four remaining photographs appear to have been taken during the same period by Barnard.
