Quagga Rare Books & Art
NEWSLETTER - June 2009

In May we sold what is probably one of the rarest and most sought after Modern Firsts. Only 500 were printed, of which 300 were distributed to libraries. The odds are heavily stacked against those collectors hoping to find a first of J.K. Rowling’s first book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, so we did not have the pleasure of having it in stock for very long!

May was also a good month in that Quagga Books made it into Time magazine. A great photograph of our Kalk Bay shop front was featured, as well as a flattering description of its contents. This led to many calls from overseas - from friends and prospective clients.

Below are a few samples of our varied and odd assortment of scarce items.

AFRICAE TABULA
Africae Tabula

Jodocus Hondius was born in 1563 at Walkene in Flanders. Something of a prodigy, he taught himself to engrave on copper and ivory at the early age of eight. In subsequent years he was to become one of the most celebrated craftsmen of his time. In addition to being an accomplished engraver his skills spread to mathematics and cosmology.

This map - Africae Tabula was composed and engraved by him in 1606. It is in wonderful condition with early colouring which remains fresh and retains a crisp clarity. A superb example of the quality of Hondius’s craftsmanship. Paper in those days was made from cotton rag unlike the inferior woodpulp used later. It is almost difficult to comprehend that it was produced over 400 years ago.

It's dimensions are 37 x 50 cm.

Price: R18 000
