ANNUAL SAADA FAIR AT KIRSTENBOSCH

In February we took part in the annual SAADA fair at Kirstenbosch. Business was good and books on South African Art were undoubtedly in highest demand. Decorative books and bindings also sold well.

The Kalk Bay shop has two copies of one of the most sought after Africana first editions:

Jock of the Bushveld
Jock of the Bushveld

Written in 1905, the book recounts Fitzpatrick’s days as a transport rider during the Transvaal gold rush. Fitzpatrick would often tell these adventure stories to his four sons. Encouraged by his friend Rudyard Kipling, he wrote the story of Jock, the irrepressible Bull Terrier (Staffie). The book was published in 1907 and reprinted a further four times in that year alone, due to its overwhelming reception with the public. It was illustrated by Edmund Caldwell who was one of Mary Tourtel’s brothers (Mary Tourtel was the creator of Rupert the Bear). After the first edition there were some changes made by the artist when inaccuracies in his drawings were bought to his attention, such as the drawings of a dung beetle pushing his load with his front legs rather than his back legs on pages 65, 337 and 457; and on page 316 a horse is shown trying to climb an impossibly high bank.

The book went on to be published in many different editions and languages, and Jock was forever immortalized as a literary hero.

Fitzpatrick (1862-1931) was imprisoned for a few months in 1896 for high treason for his role in the Jameson raid. He was knighted in 1902.
