NATAL GOVERNMENT GAZETTES

Highlights this month include a wonderful set of Natal Government Gazettes that we have acquired - a run of twenty volumes, from 1860 to 1882. The 1863 and 1874 volumes are unfortunately not present. Each year is bound as a separate volume with a leather spine and marbled boards. Of particular interest is the 1879 volume: the year of the Anglo-Zulu War. The volume opens with a Gazette Extraordinary in which Sir Bartle Frere sights the events of last July, namely the actions of Chief Sirayo and troops under his son's command, and Chetywayo's refusal to hand them over to British troops, as grounds for handing the matter over to Lord Chelmsford and his troops.

This document is basically a declaration of war against the Zulu nation, by the British. The rest of the volume is filled with proclamations, bills; government notices and reports dealing will all manner of things including the minutiae of the war. As a whole this is a fascinating and unique source of information into the politics and daily life of Natal in the late 19th century, the most important event of this time being the Anglo-Zulu conflict, its build-up and aftermath.

Entries in the set include voter's rolls, jury lists, itemized lists for the sale of gunpowder, reports on education, business sale and acquisition notices, edicts, reports on deserters from her Majesty's forces, pound notices for lost and found livestock and horses, notices on the movement of troops and provisions for their payment and deployment and government expenditure and commercial advertisements.

There are far too many detailed accounts to mention.

All bindings are uniform, tan leather spines with marbled boards and leather foredges, except for 1865, which has a black leather spine. The boards of the following volumes are loose: 1862, 1870, 1875, 1880, 1881 and 1882. All other volumes are intact and are in good condition, though the leather is somewhat scuffed and brittle. Internally all volumes are in a very good condition.

Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats
Old Possum’s book of Practical Cats
Reserve: R1900

AUCTION ENDS 5PM, FRIDAY 25 MARCH 2011
Initially Faber and Faber announced a book of children's poetry under the title Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle cats. This was never published. The publishers finally succeeded with "Old Possumís book of Practical Cats". Pressure upon the author in favour of a more general publication failed. "In resisting this pressure Mr. Eliot is believed to have been fortified by a growing desire for the company of cats, and a growing perception that it would be impolite to wrap them up with dogs. The cat poems, however, are now numerous enough to make a book by themselves."
