Quagga Rare Books and Art

NEWSLETTER - May 2011

This month we are highlighting the recent acquisition of two fantastic coloured aquatints of the Cape Mounted Rifles in action in 1846, the 7th frontier war, also known as the War of the Axe.

"The Conference at Block Drift Kaffir Land - Jany. 30th 1846; between Lt. Govenor Col. Hare and the Kaffir Chief Sandilla - before the commencement of hostilities. Present are The Royal Artillery, The 7th Dragoon Guards, and the 91st (Argyllshire), also the Cape Mounted Rifles. To his Excellency the Govenor Lieut Genl Sir Peregrine Maitland, K.C.B. this plate is respectfully inscribed by his obliged and obedient servant R. Ackermann 191, Regent Street."
published March 15th 1852

The Conference at Block Drift Kaffir Land

The Rev. J.W. Appleyard noted in his journal a few months later: "I forgot to record before that, at the time when Sandili made such a demonstration before his Honour, I believe, at Block Drift, a most remarkable interposition of Devine Providence took place. It appears that a man was appointed by Sandili, to watch for the most favourable opportunity in which the troops might be fallen upon, and to give the signal of attack by the firing of a gun. It has since come out privately, that this man made three several attempts to fire off the gun, but he failed in every instance and then gave up... it being their intention on this occasion to murder every soul"

The number of Kaffers in the field was estimated at 9000. (To his) Excellency the Govenor Lieut Genl Sir Peregrine Maitland, K.C.B. this Plate is respectfully Inscribed by his obliged and obedt Servant Roulolph Ackermann 191, Regent Str."
