On this trip he met up with acclaimed naturalist and explorer, Dr Livingstone. This book is a compilation of his journals, whereby he describes in vivid detail, his discomforts, his brushes with death as a result of the wild beasts and the hostile environment. Album de la Mission Romande – Mission Des Eglises Libres de la Suisse Romande

On the 9th of July 1875, two young missionaries, Creux and Berthoud, founded the Swiss mission station of Valdezia in the Northern Transvaal, with their field of action being a hard living and constantly tested society. The Swiss mission was famous for its high quality hospitals and schools. The Principal task was Evangelisation, however they strongly believed in the power of education as a tool to improve living conditions, with schools offering agricultural and industrial syllabi. Strong efforts to foster good race relations were made by the church, as well as a focus on cordial ties with other christian sects.

This book, written in French, includes 32 plates and 1 map.

Print mounted on card to fashion a post card – addressed to a recipient in Stellenbosch and containing two halfpenny stamps and a cancellation from Monatgu post office. Card is foxed, especially to verso. Small chip missing from bottom edge of photograph and photograph lightly faded. 11 Figures on the veranda of the Montagu hotel. At the top of the steps a man with a small, white dog and on the second step, a leopard.
