Binding is good with clear and neat text, with and a dated (1964) ink inscription on fep.

Brown cloth cover with wear particularly on edges and top and bottom of spine. Label on spine worn and discoloured. Spotting and discolouration to covers. Book is sound and contents in good condition.

Ink inscription to front fep. Pages are age toned. Boards show little wear. DW shows wear, various tears and slight losses to top and bottom spine area.

Foxing to prelims and minor foxing throughout. Small 2cm tear to pg. 3. Colour frontis by Arthur Rackham in perfect condition, with tissue guard. The book appears to have been recased and has new feps.

Black and white illustrations throughout. Foxing to the endpapers, half title and last two leaves. Leaves show some darkening. The bottom, back corner of board shows significant damage (probably caused by a dog chewing on it) and affects the very last pages, though none of the text itself is affected. DW in very poor condition with parts of the spine area missing and the rest of the spine area split in two. Also significant open tears to the DW.

No date. “Issued under the auspices of the Botanical Society of South Africa.” Stains on front and back covers, chips to top and bottom of spine, corners curled. Past owner’s signature in ink on title page.

Bookplate of noted botanist, Harry Bolus, pasted to the front endpapers. Pages uncut. Some light foxing seen in various parts of the text. Leaves show darkening due to age. Boards are slightly worn, especially the spine area, which is also slightly sunned.
