Abercrombie’s Practical Gardener or Improved System of Modern Horticulture.

A scarce early example of the Cloete Crest is pasted on the front paste-down. Daniel J Cloete (1800-1879) was probably the first to use it. Browning, toning, scattered foxing throughout. Missing tail-band. The author (1726-1806) was a Scottish horticulturist. He found employment in the Kew Royal Gardens and later set up as a market gardener at Hackney. He was asked by Lochyer Davis, a publisher, to write a work on practical gardening. His initial success was followed by a work of practical guides that achieved much popularity – his “Gardeners Pocket Journal” reached a 35th edition.
